My passion for cooking has really grown out of my love of eating – and boy do I love to eat! Food to me is pleasure; if it were just fuel we wouldn’t have taste buds. I am possibly the world’s messiest cook, but the results are (almost) always delicious, and I find it so enjoyable I can’t imagine a life without cooking.

Working at Fisher & Paykel as an industrial designer, I love gaining a deeper understanding for the science behind cooking. I am getting exposed to some incredibly talented people who share my passion for great food.

Steak Sammie

Lunch is my least favourite meal. Breakfast is an opportunity to be virtuous (weekday) or decadent (weekend); somehow I never strike a happy medium. Dinner can be dreamed of all day, and often affords us the luxury of time to lavish on flavours, techniques, presentation. But lunch. Man.

Peach Bellini

At this time of year in Dunedin the days are long – tonight the sun will not set until close to 9:30 – so there is plenty of time after work for entertaining. A little light and summery drink made with fresh peaches, this is the perfect thing to sip with friends while you watch [...]

Summer Bounty

It must seem a little peculiar to our Northern Hemisphere readers that just as we pack away the Christmas decorations for another year and enjoy a break from work with family and friends we are also fully into the heat of summer, basking in the sun by the beach, at the batch or beside the [...]

Chocolate Cinnamon Terrine

We first made this recipe two years ago, a decadent treat for Christmas day. Since then it has graced our table a number of times on auspicious occasions, when something particularly decadent is called for. We have nicknamed it Chocolate Butter.

Hot Smoked Brie with Roast Grapes

Not so much a recipe as a suggestion for deliciousness, this is incredibly simple. It is always fun to experiment with new things, so this month I thought I would try something a little different from sausages and steaks on the BBQ. Try this at your next summer soiree for something just a little bit [...]

BBQ Pork Chops with Cucumber, Apple and Fennel Salsa

There has been the odd day of late when the sun has smiled down on us, encouraging the transition from the couch to deck chair; from the kitchen to the BBQ.  We want to live outside, at least whenever nature will allow it!

Coconut Cake

I am a keen baker – I love to spend a Saturday afternoon in the kitchen, up to my elbows in recipes books and cake tins.  Often I am inspired by a recipe someone from the office has shared, or a new cookbook purchase; this cake was inspired by a bag of gorgeous coconut chips [...]

Cola Syrup

Less sweet and more spiced than commercial cola, there is real depth to the flavour of this syrup – it makes the perfect base for a mocktail. Pour over crushed ice, add a couple of very finely sliced rounds of fresh orange and lemon, and top with soda water (novelty umbrella optional).

Wilted Kale with nutmeg and butter

What I love about this side is its simplicity, and the fact the final dish truly is worth more than the sum of its parts. It is a welcome, silky addition to the side of a plate piled high with heavenly roast pork and parsnips.

Roast parsnips, pears, caramelised shallots and macadamia nuts

I have been enjoying a parsnip revival of late.   Parsnip soup is the dinner du jour in our household this week, but who can resist delicious, sweet roast parsnip? This is a vegetable synonymous with winter, roast dinners, warm fires and chilly nights.

Happy Birthday to us!

Today Our Kitchen turns 3 – another year filled with delicious food! As we grow a little older and (hopefully) wiser, our repertoires bulge with yet more recipes, shared with us by family, friends and colleagues; dreamed up and tested, tweaked and tasted so that we can cook, style, shoot and share them. We have [...]

mango puddings with lemongrass syrup

As a kid, my sweet tooth was legendary.  Mum used to hide any treats in a variety of locations around the house: in her third drawer down, hiding amongst her woolens I once found a packet of jet planes.  She sometimes hid the chocolate on top of the pantry, in the dusty gap between cupboard [...]
