White sangria

I’m sure many of you have experienced the downside of a sunny, summer’s day party. A few drinks in the sun only to feel dehydrated, lacklustre and in need of a siesta just a few hours later. It’s not only the alcohol content in your drinks which does this to you but also the sugar. Without trying to sound like an infomercial, this is the drink to prevent party-exhaustion and keep you mingling all afternoon.

It’s not high in either refined sugar or alcohol content and with the addition of fresh fruit, it keeps your hunger at bay (if you’re like me it will help to keep your hand out of the chip bowl).

You can even omit the alcohol completely if you want to feel just as spritely the next day or if you have a baby on board.

Then again, going against everything I’ve just said, if you think you can handle a boozier option add ½ to 1 cup of fruit liquor such as peach schnapps.

Use any fruit in season. To me, grapes are a must as this icy spritzer gives them an amazing crunch.

Ingredients

  • --
  • 1 can peaches in juice (alternatively you can use coconut water for sweetness)
  • 1 bottle sweet white wine such as Reisling
  • Sliced seasonal fruit (I used pineapple, peach, green grapes and passionfruit)
  • --
  • 1L sparkling water
  • 1 pint glass of ice
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • A handful of mint

Method

  • --
  • 1. In a blender, process the peaches in juice until smooth. For extra smoothness, then pass the puree through a sieve.
  • 2. In a pitcher add the peach puree, wine and fruit. Stir to combine and refrigerate until you are ready to use.
  • 3. Just before serving add the sparkling water, ice, lime juice and mint.
